Florida to Vermont – Summer 2007

Day 4: Sunday July 8th

I left Waynseboro and headed back to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and continued North on Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah National Park. Hmmm, $10 entrance fee? Good for a week, huh? Well, I’m only going to be here for a few hours, but what the heck. Again, hardly any traffic, lots of wild turkeys and deer, even a black bear! Unlike the BRP, there are 3 rest areas with restaurants, gift shops and gas on Skyline drive, one at each end and one in the middle. The best vistas are toward the north end and are well worth the ride.

By this time I was ready to make some mileage, so I hit the blue line. I-66 to I-81 North through Virgina, West Virginia, Maryland and on into Pennsylvania. There was a lot of truck traffic on I-81, but the Rogue is heavy and the trucks were no problem.

I stayed on I-81 to Scranton, PA, then head east on I-84, through New Jersey into New York , then north on the Taconic State Parkway. Years ago I took the Taconic State Parkwayto get to college in upstate NY and it seemed picturesque. Well, after the BRP, it looked like a has-been. The road conditions were poor in some sections and the rest areas were long-shuttered – not the road of my memories. Alas, you can’t go home again…

I finished the day in Grafton NY with some friends (formerly of Jacksonville ) whom I hadn’t seen in a few years. Wow – 6 states in one day. That’s a record for me.
